Lens Focal Lenghts

Choosing the right lens to do portraits is critical. As you can see from these samples, using the wrong focal length can really cause unsightly distortions. This is especially the case with wide-angle lenses that you would use to shoot landscapes and interiors; even a "normal" focal length lens (generally in the 50 - 55mm range) are less than ideal for making portraits. If you are using a 100mm or 105mm Macro lens for your intra oral photography, you have a great lens for making excellent, distortion-free portraits.

Don't be obsessed with mega-pixels!

There are digital cameras available that have 12, 12.8, even 16 megapixel sensors. The new Canon 1Ds Mark III, when it hits the market soon, will boast a 21.1 MP sensor! Those are huge files and very expensive cameras -- do you need them to get sharp, accurate images in the opertory? Short and easy answer -- no.

The Nikon D40 is a 6 mega-pixel camera, the Canon Rebel XTi is 10 mp, and both of these produce amazingly sharp, color accurate, beautiful images. They use the same lenses and flashes as their higher-priced cousins. And both are well under $1000.

Free up an extra set of hands when you're using mirrors intraorally!

Immerse the mirror in a glass of very warm water, say around 120-degrees F, just before you get ready to shoot an intraoral series.

Downloading your files to your computer

The easiest and fastest way is to use a card reader instead of directly connecting your camera. Card readers are inexpensive (generally around $20 - $25) and work perfectly well with Compact Flash (CF) and Secure Digital (SD) cards. The USB 2.0 readers are blazingly fast and require no additional software to work. Just plug and go!
